what is Guano

The following artical is copied and pasted from canadian wholesale hydroponics.com

The word guano originated from the Quichua language of the Inca civilization and means "the droppings of sea birds". It is a misnomer to refer to bat dung as guano. As the word is used today, guano describes both bat and sea bird manure. The most famous guano was that used by the Inca. The guano would collect on the rainless islands and coast of Peru. Atmospheric conditions insured a minimal loss of nutrients. There is very little leaching of valuable material, nor is there a considerable loss of nitrogenous matter. For this the Inca would guard and regulate the treasured soil enricher. Access to the guano deposits were restricted to chosen caretakers. Disrupting the rookeries could result in punishment by death.

Guano became a very important part of the development of agriculture in these United States. During the peak of the guano era, drastic steps were taken to maintain a supply for the U.S. farmer. "On August 18, 1856, Congress passed an act to authorize protection to be given to citizens of the United States who may discover guano, under which any citizen of the United States was authorized to take possession of and occupy any unclaimed island, rock or key containing guano. The discoverers of such islands were entitled to exclusive rights to the deposits thereon, but the guano could only be removed for the use of the citizens of the United States."

Guano is provided in the ready to use condition, thoroughly aged to the vintage state of a good natural fertilizer. Guano can be used inside or outdoors for all living plants. Guano supplies fast and slow release nutrients to the biological system. Apply the pure guano in smaller amounts than ordinary barnyard or poultry manure. Applied as a top dressing and worked into the soil or mixed with water and applied, guano will have a dramatic influence. Hydroponic growers, in contrast to normal fertilization, are finding that guano and water are a natural alternative to chemical solutions. Use nitrogen guano for growth, phosphorus guano for budding and all guano for your plants general health and well being. Guano can be blended with topsoil before laying sod or grass seed and while planting trees and shrubs. Add guano to your container growing mix for a supercharged potting soil.spacer.gif

The word guano stems from the Inca civilization meaning “droppings of sea birds”. Guano can come from two different animals sea birds and bats. Guano consists of ammonia, along with uric, phosphoric, oxalic, and carbonic acid, as well as some earth salts and impurities. Guano also has a high concentration of nitrates. The nitrates and phosphorous are what makes the guano an excellent fertilizer for plants.

Organa Guano

Gardening with guano has a number of uses, including as: soil builder, lawn treatment, fungicide (when used as a foliar) and as composting activator (nutrients and microbes speed up decomposition process). Guano can be purchased in the ready to use condition, thoroughly aged to the vintage state of a good natural fertilizer. Guano can be used with outdoor plants, indoor plants and can also be used in hydroponic application. Guano supplies fast and slow release nutrients to the biological system of plants.

Hydroponic growers are finding that guano and water are a natural alternative to harsh chemical solutions that can burn or cause harm to plants. Growers use nitrogen guano for growth, phosphorus guano for budding and all guano for your plants general health and well being. Guano can be blended with topsoil before laying sod or grass seed and while planting trees and shrubs. Add guano to your container growing mix for a supercharged potting soil or mix in a reservoir for hydroponic growers.

What is Nature's Own Guano?

grow.jpg

Nature's Own Guano is bat manure. It is 100% organic and highly concentrated. It has been formed slowly over millions of years to produce a valuable and natural source of plant nutrients and essential trace elements. This simple and remarkable natural garden fertiliser works wonders on every plant from tomatoes and fruit through to roses, lawns and indoor gardens.

Why are there two different types of Guano available?

The chemical composition of Guano is dictated by many factors such as the species of bat, diet, location, climate (dry or humid) and age.

As a result Guano is available as Guano Supergrow for all the vegetative growth and Guano Superbloom for all flowering and fruiting needs. Guano can be used as the sole source of plant nutrition, or depending on crop needs, can be used in conjunction with chemical nutrients or vitamin supplements.

What are the N-P-K's of Guano SuperGrow and Guano Superbloom?

A typical sample of Guano Supergrow will contain approximately 10.0% by weight of nitrogen as nitrate or ammonium, approximately 10.0% by weight phosphorus as phosphoric acid (P205) and approximately 2.0% by weight potassium as potash (K20). (1-9-1).

Are there trace elements in Guano?

Nature's Own Guano contains all trace elements needed to promote healthy plant growth, i.e. Manganese, Magnesium, Iron, Molybdenum, Cobalt, Sodium, Zinc and Calcium.

Nature's Own Guano is 100% natural organic product and contains no heavy metals or man-made contaminants.

How does Guano work?

Nature's Own Guano works by providing plants with short term, plus long term, nutrition.

Nature's Own Guano has the unique advantage of being fossilised. It has slowly undergone conversion into rock form by chemical reaction occurring over a very long time. For Gardeners, this means essential nutrients are more soluble and readily available for plant uptake than traditional organic matter, resulting in outstanding plant growth. Even inexperienced gardeners can confidently produce large, healthy crops when applying Guano.

No damaging root burning occurs with Guano as it does with caged poultry manure or concentrated synthetic fertilisers. Guano is safe to use in the most delicate plants, such as orchids. This also makes it ideal for hydroponic use.

What results are expected when using Guano?

Natural sweetness and flavour of edible plants is greatly improved.

Prime quality of produce and notable increase in plant yields.

Soils are improved and conditioned for healthy growth

Can Nature's Own Guano be used in Hydroponic Situations?

Yes. Nature's Own Guano is ideal for all hydroponic situation. This includes NFT, Rockwool, Perlite, Vermiculite and Expanded Clay.

Traditionally hydroponics and organic gardening have been in direct opposition to each other. Plants will undoubtedly survive on a hydroponic nutrient solution - but plants need both inorganic and organic substances to reach their full potential.

By introducing the organic living element into a hydroponic situation, vast improvements in yield, taste, smell and nutrition content will be observed.

For best results Nature's Own recommends Guano is used in conjunction with chemical solutions.

Put the recommended tea in the stocking, tie a loop knot in it and hang it in your tea bucket. The tea should look like a mud puddle. Agitate the bag in the water vigorously. An aquarium pump and airstone will dissolve oxygen into the solution and keep the good bacteria (microherd) alive and thriving. Let it bubble a day or two before you use it. If you find you are making too much tea and having to throw it out, use 2 1/2 gallons of water and cut the nute ammount by half.
